Description

About the Craft : Gond painting is a folk and tribal form of art that is practised by the largest Adivasi Community in India and are predominantly from Madhya Pradesh, but can also be found in pockets of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhatisgarh, and Odisha. The work of Gond artists is rooted in their folk tales and culture, based on a strong element of storytelling. According to the Gond belief system, all things are inhabited by a spirit and, consequently, are sacred. Gond paintings are a reflection of man’s close connection with his natural surroundings and very often are narratives from ancient legends, folklores, fantasies and aspirations.
About the Artisan: Mahesh Singh Shyam is a 48-year-old Gond artist from Anoopur, Madhya Pradesh. He has been practising folk art for the last 15 years and is a disciple of Late. Jan Gan Singh Shyam. Mahesh has developed his own unique style, which is greatly inspired by the traditional Gond art form. He creates intricate and vibrant paintings on various mediums such as paper sheets, canvas, sarees, dupattas, and trays. In addition to his own work, Mahesh has also trained 12 tribal artisans to help them earn a livelihood through this art form.
