About the Artisan : Akhil Jana started the organization Suchetana Mat in 2009. He learned the craft of weaving masland from his mother at the age of 14. He mastered the craft by age 20 and started his enterprise Suchetana Mat Unit. Presently, Suchetana Mat Unit supports around 85 women artisans spread across the village of Sarta in Medinipur.
About the Craft: he raw material, Madurkathi grass, is harvested twice a year. Once harvested, the grass is sliced with hands in an intensive process and is left to dry in the sun. Once dried up, it is again soaked in water and dyed using vegetable dyes. The warp is cotton which is procured locally. After warping is done and the dyed grass is dried up, the process of weaving begins. Once the mats are woven, the corners are stitched with fabric to secure the ends. The mats are also converted to utility products.
