About the Artisan :: Luhar Mustaq, a copper bell artisan from Kutch, Gujarat has been practicing the craft since the past 15 years. He adapted this centuries old skill from his grandfather and continues to carry his legacy. Mustaq is supported by his entire family in the manufacturing of bells, involving a team 8-10 people, with women doing 30-40 percent of the work.
The products range from keychains to bells to musical instruments. Copper bells have been extremely popular in the USA since the last 40-45 years, making it the largest market specially during Christmas.
About the Craft: Using the traditional process of heating and beating, copper bells are manufactured over the course of five important steps from shaping the metal sheet, to applying metal powder, mud wrapping, heating and tuning, Originating from Sindh, these bells were used by cattle rearers to identify and track the movement of their livestock. In India, copper bells are made exclusively in the Kutcch region of Gujarat using basic materials including scrap Iron sheets, metal powder, mixture of raw cotton and mud.
