About the Craft: One of the oldest, finest and most popular weaves of India is Banarsi. The banarsi weavers produce one of the finest sarees, dupattas and fabrics in jamawar, brocade, kinkhab, meenakari and jamdani using silk, zari and cotton yarns. The motifs in each of these weaves draw inspiration from Muslim and Budhhist cultures and influences including floral and geometric patterns. In India, these silks are often worn on occasions, festivals and ceremonies
About the Artisan:: Sumaiya textile is an old group of weavers run by Abdul Salam a traditional banarsi weaver. Salam’s talent has been appreciated and recognised at Delhi’s Crafts Museum where he has had the opportunity to give several demonstrations. He has also been a master trainer at Bunkar Sewa Kendra in Banaras. The group mostly sells directly through exhibitions and local orders from gaddidars in Banaras. Over the years Salam has engaged upto 10-12 women and 25-30 men engaging them in different processes of production. While some are engaged in weaving, others work on finishing, cutting and packaging. His children are now taking their traditional legacy of more than 100 years forward by reaching new markets and expanding their craft. They have for the first time explored the online medium with Dastkar.
