About the Craft: This traditional hereditary craft of Gujarat has been practiced by the Vaghri community for the last four centuries. These paintings of the Mother Goddess are primarily used for worship traditionally. First, a very fine outline in black is drawn on a piece of cloth with a kalam made from a bamboo stick. Colours are then filled in using vegetable colours with a brush made from the date palm tree. The colours are all natural dyes made from neel (indigo), loha (iron), tamarind seeds (imli), and haldi (turmeric). The Mata ni pachhedi has a central figure of the female deity with other elements arranged around her stylistically.
