About the Craft and Artisan :: Mohammad Dilshad learnt the art of weaving Chanderi sarees from his father after he was forced to drop out of school at a young age due to difficult economic circumstances. With over 20 years of experience, he mastered the craft of weaving and was honored with the National Award by the Ministry of Textiles in 2010. He was also awarded the National Kabir Bunkar award in 2011-12. He continues to upskill his art by undergoing trainings and workshops in design and weaving and shares the learning and skills with children and adults in his community. Dilshad bhai has represented India at exhibitions in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Malaysia.

About the craft: Chanderi is an ethnic textile characterized by its lightweight, sheer quality, and fine texture. Chanderi sarees emerged from the Chanderi region in Madhya Pradesh where traditional weavers practise the craft of manufacturing textured sarees in cotton, and silk. The textiles are produced from three kinds of fabrics: pure silk, Chanderi cotton and silk cotton and adorned with traditional designs or butis of floral art, peacocks and geometric patterns in gold and silver zari. The butis or motifs on Chanderi fabrics are chiefly handwoven on handloom, by using several shapes, and sizes of needles.
