About the Craft: Jalakdozi, or crewel embroidery, is one of the specialized styles of hand embroidery practiced in Kashmir made on hand-woven cotton canvas (dusooti), silk, organza and woolens. Groups of women come together and embroider woolen yarns, dyed traditionally in desired shades, using a 5-6 inch long hook needle (Aari or Amli). Designs are traced onto the base fabric by professional tracers also known as Naqaash using butter paper, chalk or charcoal powder adding Gum Arabic or oil to make the impressions durable. These are later washed in mild detergents and tailored to make the final product. From Cushion Covers, to Bed Covers, Curtains and Floor Rugs, Table Covers, Table Runners, Table Mats and Napkins, Bags, Clutches and Wallets there is a wide range of products made.
About the Artisan: An artisan himself, Jahangir Ahmed Bhatt graduated from Craft Development Institute and founded “The Crewel” 10 years ago, with a group of 25 girls in the Anantnag district in south Kashmir, to preserve traditional Kashmiri art and revive its demand. Jahangir is motivated to push for the economic development and empowerment of women in the area. Nearly 2.5 lakh artisans, mostly women in the state are directly dependent upon handicrafts for their livelihood. Over the years, The Crewel has been able to train more than 100 craftswomen in 10 villages and has supported several disadvantaged families by creating livelihood opportunities and education for their children.
