About the Craft : The art of Mata-ni-Pachedi is the pride of the nomadic Vaghari community of Gujarat. Its literal translation, “Behind the Goddess”, throws light on its rise – when the community was barred from entering the temples, they made their own shrines by painting imagery and narratives of gods and goddesses on rectangular pieces of cloth. Dedication, patience and perseverance gave rise to a beautifully rendered narrative of Indian folklore using a delicate Bamboo stick along with a combination of bright natural pigments. Traditional Mata-ni-Pachedis are often found in colors of red, with backdrops of black and white. With the evolution of the craft, the paintings are now being found in various other shades of brighter yellow, blue and more.
About the Artisan: Vasant Manubhai Chitara is a master craftsman from Gujarat, who acquired a State Award in 1995 and the National Award for excellence in Kalamkari in 2001, along with many praises, on his meticulous work of Mata-Ni-Pachedi. Vasant bhai was born in a family of traditional kalamkari painters in Ahmedabad. He learnt the craft from his father who is a State Awardee. He is often spotted at the Dastkar bazaars, showcasing his work in our exhibition hall. His paintings often receive a special showcase due to the intricacies he applies in his design.
