About the Craft ::Parampara is a 40 member artisan organisation (almost 40% are women) based in Raghurajpur, Orissa. The group practices a range of traditional Oriya crafts including pattachitra painting, palm leaf etching, painted wooden and papier-m?ch? boxes, masks and toys. Parampara?s association with Dastkar goes back to the 80s, incorporating design, marketing and product development.
About the Craft: pattachitra is a painting done on tussar or cotton fabric using four main colours ? blue, white, red and yellow. These colours are obtained by crushing locally available stone. The usual compositions depict religious subjects such as those of divine figures like Krishna, Vishnu, Ganesh etc. The craftsmanship of pattachitra paintings is extremely detailed with mesmerizing finesse. A simple painting of 8? x 12? may take up to ten days to complete.
