About the Craft and Artisan :: A native of India, dhurries have been an essential item of home furnishing and floor coverings to traditional households for centuries. In the sub-continent, they are not just synonymous to carpets or rugs, but have served as substitutes for bedding and packaging for several Indians. The Punja dhurrie is an attractive textile, known for its versatility, sturdy flat weaves, bright colours, and geometric designs. It is being woven in India for more than thousand years, preserving the originality of the basic design of the primitive loom.
About the Artisan : With a passion for traditional crafts and their potential to provide sustainable livelihoods to artisans, Vivek Shrivastava founded Forum for Rural Weavers, a non-profit social enterprise in May 2018. Earlier, he also founded Kal?vil?sa Handmade in Aug 2011 to work with dhurrie weavers. Forum for Rural Weavers is a non -profit social enterprise working with artisan groups to create handwoven dhurrie rugs in central India. They partner with local artisan groups in Madhya Pradesh to produce contemporary flat-weave rugs. Each rug is hand-made on a traditional wooden loom using weaving techniques which have been passed on through generations.
