About the Artisan ::Mohammad Tahir, an electronics and communications engineer by education, decided to live his father?s dream of continuing his traditional family craft that dates back to the 18th century. His father Mohd Ayub, a mastercraftsman has always taken pride in his ancestral heritage and wished to take it to new heights. Mohd Tahir, revived the bleak future of his father?s craft that had been severely impacted by modern screen-printing, demonetisation, and the very recent COVID-19 pandemic. He creatively expanded the usage of his craft by venturing into more contemporary versions of the art of carving and block making. Instead of limiting it to making wooden blocks for printing, he incorporated these wooden blocks into several items of home and fashion accessories, intricately carved table tops, frames, trays, boxes etc. The patterns for these blocks are exquisitely entwined flowers and leaves, borders, panels, peacocks, elephants and more. Over the years, these blocks have also become popular as creative educational tools in teaching children formation of shapes, use of colour, hand movement as well as block printing.
About the Craft:The art of woodcarving was introduced to India by Iran during the Mughal Period. Having developed in Lucknow and Delhi, the craft was used to print carpets, wall hangings bed covers and more. Sheesham wood was used for printing blocks as it best weathered the chemical dyes used. Demand for finely carved wood blocks which were used for printing textiles reduced drastically with the development of screen printing, forcing artisans to make a shift to other professions.
