About the Craft and Artisan :: Noor Salma, a craftswoman from Channapatna, collects natural lac from the forest, applies to a wooden piece while it is turned on an electric lathe. The skill lies in manipulating the lac colour on wood, letting it heat and melt through friction with the rotating piece of wood on the lathe. The preferred colours for toys and household accessories are bright red, henna green, deep black, yellow ochre and orange. Made from ivory wood and coated with lacquer made from vegetable dyes ensures that they are non – toxic and safe for use by children.
