About the Craft and Artisan :: An internationally renowned Bhil craftswoman, Geeta Bariya comes from a family with no lineage in the craft that has gained her identity. To her luck, she was married into a family of Bhil artisans. An uncle from the family taught her the basics of the art of Bhil painting. In awe of the art, she then came across a workshop taking place in Bharat Bhavan, and earned her way to purchasing paints, brushes and a canvas, even after being rejected an entry into the workshop! And thus, her journey with Bhil began. She tells us, ?None of us could have predicted that what began as charcoal drawings on my kitchen walls would one day get me commissions, exhibitions and residencies. I have travelled to many parts of India with my work and met all kinds of people. I am proud of my work. It has brought me financial independence, fame and new experiences. I am now encouraging other women in our family to learn the art of Bhil painting.”
