About the Craft and Artisan : Sangeeta Bariya is an accomplished Bhil Pithora artist who was born in the Bhil tribe community of Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh. She was interested in paintings since childhood and used to paint along with her studies.
Following her graduation, she got married and was introduced to Bhil Pithora painting by her husband and his parents.
It has been almost four years since Sangeeta has been making Bhil Pithora paintings.
Bhil Pithora painting is made on the wall during weddings and festivals in the tribal villages, making it an important part of their culture. In villages, wall paintings are made using natural colors like turmeric, henna, clay, rice and coal. The specialty of Bhil Pithora painting is Bindi or dot. In the village, the shape of Bindi is given on the wall using the thumb of the hand. In Bhil tribe, tattooing is done using Bindi only, which is done by the women of the village on their body.
