About the Artisan: Narayani Handicrafts is an organisation of artisans from Odisha and was established in the year 2017. Currently, the organisation is working with and uplifting 30 men and women who are OBC rural artisans. They work primarily on handcrafting brass, white metal and copper products. Of their craft, they are able to create exquisite modern dhokra necklaces, anklets, bracelets and earrings.
About the Craft : Dhokra means casting of bell metal through a lost wax process. During the process, the vacuum created between the core and the clay layer is filled with molten metal, which is then allowed to cool down and solidify after it vaporizes. The outer clay mould is cracked open, revealing the beauty of the final sculpture. Dhokra is an alloy of nickel, brass and zinc. When these three are mixed in the appropriate proportion it gives an antique look.
