About the Artist : Prakash Joshi Ji comes from the Joshi family in Rajasthan that has been into painting Phad art for almost 300 years. He took to the art of Phad when he was a child, from his father Shri Nand Kishore Ji. He has been awarded the District Award and the State Award in 98, National Merit Award in 2008, National Award in 2009 and the Kalamani Award in 2010 for his work.
About the Craft : Phad painting is a 10-century-old style of religious scroll painting and folk painting, practised in Rajasthan. This painting style is traditionally done on a long piece of cloth or canvas called Phad. Traditionally, the narratives of the folk deities of Rajasthan, mainly Pabuji and Devnarayan are depicted on the pads. The Bhopas, the priest-singers traditionally carry the painted phads along with them and use these as the mobile temples of the folk deities, who are worshipped by the Rebari community of the region.
