Shibori, a meticulous pleating and binding technique, originates from Japan. The term ‘Shibori’ is derived from ‘shiboru,’ meaning squeezing and pleating.
In Shibori tie-dye, the fabric is bound, tied, sewn, and then twisted, knotted, or folded to create areas that resist the dye, forming patterns.
The process begins with a white cloth, such as silk, chanderi, or cotton, which is folded to create a regular pattern. The cloth is then prepared with the intended design and imprinted with ‘neel.’ It is sewn with silk thread, which acts as a stencil for the dye. The sewn fabric is soaked for 24 hours.
This fabric preparation leads to the final dyeing process in the desired color. Washing the cloth 3-4 times ensures the color sets on the fabric. Once the silk thread is carefully removed, it reveals a vibrant Shibori Tie-Dye.
Shibori is a traditional craft in India, primarily practiced in the clusters of Rajasthan and Gujarat.
