About Craft: Madurkathi grass mat weaving in West Bengal dates back to the Mughal period when �Masland� mats of superfine variety with fine cotton as warp were produced under royal patronage. Madurkathi was awarded the geographical indication (GI) tag in April 2018.
>About Organization: Akhil Jana started the organization Suchetana Mat in 2007 in Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal. He learned the craft of weaving 'Masland' fine grass mats from his mother at the age of 14. He mastered the craft by age 20 and started his enterprise Suchetana Mat Unit. Presently, Suchetana Mat Unit supports around 72 women artisans spread across Sartla village in Sabang (a subdivision of Paschim Medinipur).
In the AMEX Dastkar AT HOME Project, Dastkar revived the very exquisite madur mat weaving of the past while also creating new colour schemes and mat layouts designed by Sangeeta Sen.
