Description

About the Artist : Shoubhik Daw, a passionate 43-year-old from West Bengal’s Dist. Hooghly. As traditional Dhokra jewellery sales began to decline, he had the idea to create a new product line while preserving the original jewellery’s design elements.
He combined traditional wood carving and dhokra techniques to make these unique serving trays etc.
Over 15 years have passed since he founded Kutir Udyog, and in 2011 he received a State Award for his efforts.
About the Craft :: Dhokra means casting of bell metal through a lost wax process. During the process, the vacuum created between the core and the clay layer is filled with molten metal, which is then allowed to cool down and solidify after it vaporizes. The outer clay mould is cracked open, revealing the beauty of the final sculpture. Dhokra is an alloy of nickel, brass and zinc. When these three are mixed in the appropriate proportion it gives an antique look.
